Roots and Wings

When my little sister was, well littler, she sang a song for an assembly that touched everyone there. Lucky for me I got to hear her sing it many times as she practiced and I loved it! The chorus has stuck with me and I've been thinking about it a lot lately. The words to the chorus are

Roots and wings are precious things,
It's all I have, it's all you need
One day you'll fly and wave goodbye
I give you roots and wings

As I near the end of winter semester I have been especially missing my family and my home town. I almost decided to come home for the whole summer but settled on coming home for a visit during the summer. Part of me was tired of flying on my own wings and wanted to fall back on my roots and take a break. But while it is time to try my wings with new classes, new friends, new apartments I always know that I can fall back on my family, my roots, when I need support and strength. Whether it be a late night phone call, motivation to study for tests, or just a friend, my family is always there for me. And on Wednesday my parents are coming out to visit me!! Well really, they're coming for my sisters graduation but still... they're coming to visit me! I love my roots. They keep me grounded and hold me up when I find it hard to support myself and my wings get tired.

  1. I like the phrase "I always know that I can fall back on my family." So true :)
