The power of sight is never as evident as when you've been three months too long on your old glasses prescription. I got my new prescription (and new frames) today and it is wonderful! The words on the page no longer squirm when I look at them, and hopefully the power-points in class will make more sense now.
I've been thinking lately about the difference between looking and seeing. I at least am guilty of looking sometimes when I should have been seeing. For example, when your little sister tries to show you what she made at school and you just glance at it and say "that's nice" or when a roommate asks if their outfit matches and you glance and agree without really seeing what they're wearing. I think sometimes our world is so fast paced that we don't take the time to stop and see what's happening around us.
On a semi related note, one of my favorite quotes, and the basis for the name of this blog says: "The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, admidst the simple beauty of nature." -Anne Frank
I love this quote because it is so true! Yesterday I went outside just because I was feeling trapped in my apartment and it was wonderful and refreshing! It gives you a chance to slow down and really appreciate the wonderful world that God created for us and that we are privileged to live in.
So the purpose of this blog is not just to chronicle my adventures, but also to note the simple beauties all around me. Enjoy!
As my biology professor would say, you have a "sense of wonder" ;)I guess that I'm going to have to prepare myself for deep social commentary when reading your blog!
ReplyDeleteThat quote is beautiful, Em. Simple beauties here today: I saw some daffodil greens poking through the ground, and this a.m. while I was still in bed I could hear the geese returning. Freshness peeking into the Ohio winter!
